Setting up a wireless network - The beginners guide!
Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:13

In this day in age having a wireless network in your house or place of business is every thing! The ability to connect multiple devices such as printers, computers, scanners, fax machines and more can be made so easy with out the need of messy cables... but were do we start and what is needed?

What you will need
1.) Telephone line - Needed for fixed internet connection only

2.) Internet connection through an internet provider - TPG, Optus, Three, Telstra, Vodafone, iiNet....
3.) Modem/Router
4.) Compatibility between your devices

1.) The telephone line! - Not needed for users wanting a mobile 3G connection / Skip this step if this is you!

* First and foremost you will need a telephone line at the premises were you are wanting the internet connected, Keep in mind that most internet service providers will offer telephone line rental as part of a bundle deal with your internet, alternatively if you already have a telephone number then all you need to do is get the internet connected (Move to step 2.)

2.) The second thing you will need is some form of internet connection, whether it be a 3G mobile connection or a hard wired fixed connection through your phone line at home.
* 3G internet connections are great for people on the move who do not want to worry about being tied down to one particular area, but internet browsing speeds and usage will vary from area to area. Recommended for the light internet user / mums or dads checking emails and basic web sites such as sports and weather.

* Hard wired fixed connections are by far the most common type of internet facility available to date and generally offer a faster speed for browsing and downloading, If your a big internet user we recommend this type of connection over a 3G wireless connection due to the data allowance generally given to you. Keep in mind that you will need an active phone line running to your house or office.

Once you have decided what you want to use the internet for its time to find an appropriate internet provider. Below are a list of ISP's that offer 3G or fixed line internet services.

3.) The hardware - Modem/router

* Choosing the right hardware for your wireless network can be a difficult task as there are so many manufactures out there offering similar products.
Like any product there are different grades of quality, features and price ranges to look at
If you have decided to opt for the 3G internet connection you will need to find a suitable modem router such as the D-Link DWR-113 3G/4G Wireless N 150 Router which is an affordable device under $100.00
Most internet providers will offer a modem/router when signing up to a contract but as a rule of thumb they will be a very basic unit offering average internet connection speeds and limiting you to future upgrades, Our recommendation is to trial the modem provided to you and if experiencing issues such as slow internet connections, internet drop outs and compatibility issues between your computers, laptops and game consoles then look at upgrading.
Current modem/routers are generally classed in two speed variations - Wireless G supporting up to 54mbps (the transfer speed) and wireless N supporting up to 300mbps and 600mbps.

To keep it simple and easy to understand the higher transfer speeds on modem routers (Wireless N 300/600) will allow your network to function much faster!

4.) Compatibility between your devices.
The compatibility between devices on your network (laptops, desktop computers, gaming consoles and so on....) can be an issue down the track or result in certain devices receiving slower connection speeds than others. The best way to make sure all devices are up to scratch to check the network adapter or supported networks by each device, you can do so by checking the specifications on each device or go into the network options. Most devices will display some form of speed generally referring to (54mbps or 300mbps/600mbps as mentioned above).

Whilst we have tried to cover the basics and make this guide as straight forward as possible you may find that a technician is needed to do the dirty work for you if you run into trouble.

It’s always best to call around and find out what sort of cost you will be up for prior to calling some one out
