Gorilla Glass, manufactured by Corning, is an alkali-aluminosilicate sheet glass engineered specifically to be thin, light and damage-resistant. Its primary application is as a cover glass for the exterior of portable electronic devices with screens, such as mobile phones, portable media players, and laptop computer displays. Gorilla Glass's most useful qualities are its strength, allowing very thin glass to be made without excessive fragility, and scratch resistance. In 2010 it was used in about 20 percent of the world's approximately 200 million mobile handsets. Corning says that Gorilla Glass is RF compatible and has outstanding optical clarity, making it suitable for HD and 3D television displays. It has a Vickers hardness of 622–701 kgf/mm2. The glass is toughened by ion exchange. It is placed in a hot bath of molten potassium salt at a temperature of approximately 400 °C (~750 °F). Smaller sodium ions leave the glass, and larger potassium ions from the salt bath replace them. These larger ions take up more room and are pressed together when the glass cools, producing a layer of compressive stress on the surface of the glass. Gorilla Glass's special composition enables the potassium ions to diffuse far into the surface, creating high compressive stress deep into the glass. This layer of compression creates a surface that is more resistant to damage from everyday use. Like all glass, Gorilla Glass can be recycled. Why do i wont Gorilla glass on my device? Scrapes, bumps, and drops are a fact of life, but Gorilla Glass enables your device to resist damage from the abuses that come with everyday use. Gorilla Glass also has strong aesthetic appeal. It’s thin, lightweight, and cool to the touch – enabling the sleekest designs. What makes Gorilla glass so resistant? The unique composition of Gorilla Glass allows for a deep layer of high compressive stress (created through an ion-exchange process). This compression acts as a sort of “armor,” making the glass exceptionally tough and damage resistant. Can i break Gorilla Glass? If subjected to enough abuse, Gorilla Glass can break. However, Gorilla Glass is better able to survive the real-world events that most commonly cause glass to scratch, chip, or break. |
