Zookeepers at Monarto Zoo have sifted through hundreds of name suggestions for the female Chimpanzee, born in the early hours of August 21, before settling on Zuri which means beautiful.
The public were asked to help name this precious girl by making suggestions of an African descent, with a special meaning, and Acting Senior Primate Keeper, Laura Hanley, said Zuri definitely fits the bill.
“All of us here at Monarto were blown away by the amount of suggestions we received, there were more than 300 which we shortlisted and then shortlisted again before we finally settled on Zuri,” Laura said.
“The winning entrant suggested the name as our new addition brings a beautiful relationship to the resident chimp group and this is exactly the special meaning we were searching for, in addition to this we feel that the relationship between mother and daughter is beautiful as is the experience Zuri’s given all the zookeepers, staff and visitors that have seen her!”
