A warning that Federal Labor is prepared to take unilateral action to override the states and implement a new Murray Darling Basin Plan.

That is if they cannot agree on a plan to restore the river's health.

Water Minister Tony Burke's warning came ahead of talks with Premier Jay Weatherill about the proposed Basin plan.

Mr Weatherill has laid down a 6 point plan of non negotiables including a volume of water larger than the suggested 2750 billion litres figure in the revised plan.
