Federal Labor says more time is needed to bring the states closer together over the revised Murray Darling Basin plan.

More bickering has surfaced after the states failed to reach agreement by yesterday's deadline.

South Australia is still demanding more water to be returned to the system while the upstream states claim the plan will destroy the economy of their irrigation communities.

Water Minister Tony Burke has responded by extending the consultation period for a further two weeks
