Just under half of long-distance truck drivers across the country suffer from a sleep and respiratory condition and are putting lives of other road users at risk.

Research shows only 12% of truck drivers with the disorder are picked up because the medical tests used, rely on self-assessment.

Hundreds of truckies were surveyed about their fatigue levels at truck stops between Perth and Brisbane, although none was surveyed in SA.

The Australasian Sleep Association says fatigue is a significant factor contributing to the road toll.
