A dramatic series of events has led to the hospitalisation of 5 people after their vehicle was swept down a river near Milang.

The weekend drama unfolded when their van attempted to cross the flooded Angus River but was swept away and travelled nearly 200 metres.

Three scrambled to safety while two others sat on top of the vehicle waiting for help.

Farmer Ray McDonald heard their cries when he was checking the river level.

Emergency services rescued the group.

The vehicle is unsalvageable.
