kidney disease Kidney disease is increasing at an alarming rate across Australia, experts warn.

A report says the number of people being kept alive by an organ donation or dialysis almost tripled between 1991 and 2009 - from 6643 to 18,267.

The number of people with kidney disease also may increase by 80 per cent within the next 10 years, as the population ages and more are diagnosed with diabetes.

Kidney Health Australia national medical director Associate Professor Tim Mathew said while diagnosis and deaths of other chronic diseases in Australia was declining, kidney disease was increasing.
