Daredevil Felix Baumgartner has safely completed a freefall from the edge of space, breaking the speed of sound in doing so.

Mission control (and the rest of the world) erupted in cheers as Felix Baumgartner landed safely on earth after freefalling 39km.  The daredevil reached a top speed of 1342km per hour as he fell from the edge of space. 

In the record breaking fall, Baumgartner travelled at 1.24 times the speed of sound wearing just a high-tech suit and landed safely with the help of a parachute canopy.

Baumgartner landed in the eastern New Mexico desert just minutes after actually jumping from the capsule from the edge of space.

When interviewed after the fall, Baumgartner spoke of travelling faster than sound:

“It’s hard to describe because you don't feel it.''

He told reporters, “You don’t know how fast you travel".”

“When I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you do not think about breaking records anymore, you do not think about gaining scientific data. The only thing you want is to come back alive,'' he said.

Baumgartner was forced to abort last week’s first attempt due to bad weather conditions.
