Everybody loves a big hit in the NRL. However nobody likes to see the sickening after effect of a player getting injured due to that same hit. This is where the problem lies. We’ve seen some shoulder charges go horribly wrong, mainly Frank Pritchard on David Simmons and Ben Te’o on Matt Groat. It is a tough one, I mean these guys are highly paid footballers who know that there is the possibility of being injured as it is a contact sport. On the the other hand players shouldn’t have to go to work having in the back of their mind that they could be leaving the field concussed. Now shoulder charges have been at the centre of controversy in the NRL since they were banned from Rugby. My issue isn’t safety with the shoulder charge it’s the stupidity of trying it on when you could just as easily affect the tackle. How many times do you see a player run out of the line to put on the big shot and either miss completely or even worse put the hit on just for the affected player to bounce off and run another 20 or 30 metres! If I was coach I'd sideline them for their idiocy as opposed to anything with safety. As a kid we were always taught to lead and drive with the shoulder in a tackle, so if you are going to ban that you may as well just ban tackling, as swinging arms can do just as much damage. So what do you reckon should shoulder charges be banned? |
