Ian Thorpe is Australia’s most successful Olympian, having won 5 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze at the games, not too mention 22 world records, 13 world championship medals and 11 commonwealth gold medals (including 10 gold) over his career.

There’s no doubt he was great, you don’t earn the name ‘Thorpedo’ for no reason, but in 2004 in his pet event, the 200metre freestyle, he had a tough task ahead, taking on Michael Phelps and Pieter van den Hoogenband.
