It was supposed to be the pinnacle moment of Australia’s London achievements, a comfortable win in the 4x100m freestyle relay.

But instead of a comfortable swim, Aussie viewers were given a struggle.  Australia’s golden boy looked sluggish as France, the US and Russia took out medal positions, leaving a flabbergasted Magnusson.

So what happened?

The Twitterverse was in overdrive following the race, many hitting back at what looked like a brush off of reporters from Magnussen, one fan saying.

"Poor form by James Magnussen in post-race interview. Total lack of grace and respect. #London2012.”

Paralympic champ Kurt Fearnley Tweeted:

“Magnussen. Tough gig Going into 1st games with huge personal/public expectations. The best can respond positively to bad situation. #gohard."

We later found out that it Magnussen was not to blame for the so called subbing or brushing off of reporters, it was more a case of he was unaware of them.  Rooney, a former swimmer herself, Tweeted this morning:

"Would like everyone to know that Magnussen didn't brush me, he was just walking around in a daze, don't think he even knew I was there."

Bryce Corbett from the Australian Women's Weekly wrote:

"After building him up as a god, now we dive in and tear him down. Now there's an Olympic event we excel at #tallpoppy #magnussen."
