Facebook

New Facebook feature called ‘Friendshake.’ GPS location used to add friends. Line blurred between ‘harmless online Facebook stalking’ to real life stalking.

Facebook has announced a new feature!  But Before you prepare for a world of complaints and start a new page called ‘make the old Facebook come back again’ – this change doesn't change the look or feel of Facebook, it in actual fact, just makes it easier to add friends when out and about.

The problem right now is if your at a gig or party and you ‘totes wanna add that cute whoever’ to your friends list, you have to type in their name and search through many different options.

The way Friendshake works is by using your phones GPS and who ever else has the Facebook App’s GPS to create a small list of people to choose from when adding friends, making the process that much faster.

Here is kind of what the App looks like, bear in mind there’s no one to actually add because well, no one has it at the Power office.

Friendshake

So all in al sounds great doesn't it?  More friends equals more people to read my status updates and to invite to my band’s gigs or just to feel good about yourself during a Nanna-night-in Facebook session?

The problem arises when your a creepy person and you’ve been staring at someone all night, if you have this App. and you notice that the person has the App. as well, you can simply pull up their personal information on their profile and you have names, professions, and in some cases even addresses and phone numbers.

Verdict?

At best this will be used for what it’s intended, plus a little bit of stalking like you’d do at home to someone that’s a friend of a friend, except in this case you would be ‘online stalking’ someone you have no connection to, except for the fact your sitting in the same room/location/bus/etc as them.

At worse this will be used for predatory advances, blurring the line between ‘harmless online Facebook stalking’ to actual harmful, get yourself a restraining order, real life stalking.
