An initial round of air quality testing ordered by Wingecarribee Council on asbestos effected roads in the Robertson area has given the all clear.

Asbestos contaminated gravel was used over a distance of  up to 6KM on Vandenbergh, Yeola, Fountaindale, and Lees Roads.

Tests for airborne asbestos fibres were  taken on the four roads, and have returned results below the lowest detectable levels.

The possibility the  contaminated material was also used on other roads, and shoulders in the shire is under investigation.

An inquiry is also underway into the source of the material and what tests were undertaken before it was used.

Mayor Ken Halstead says he believes the effected roads may have to be re-built at considerable cost.

In the meantime the four  roads have been closed to all but local traffic, and water is being sprayed on a regular basis to keep down dust.
