Tuesday, 07 August 2012 00:34

gravel road Wingecarribee Mayor Ken Halstead says he is appalled at the discovery of asbestos of local roads,  and aside the from possible health effects on local users, believes it will have a huge financial impact on the shire.

Six Kilometres of roads are now being tested after Yeola and Vanderberg Roads, which are used regularly by about 40 local residents,  both returned positive readings.

gravel road surface Fountaindale and Lees Road are also under investigation, while the consultants are also examining if other un-sealed roads in the shire may been re-sheeted with the same material.

water cart Shire council general manager Jason Gordon says the two positive readings have been received and the roads in question  are being watered down to contain dust.

Mayor Halstead, himself an engineer, says  it is not just a matter of sealing over the top of the contaminated surface, because as the roads wear the asbestos will be exposed again.

He says the roads will have to be totally re-built and answers found why the material was used in the first place
