The Health Services Union has demanded the New South Wales Ambulance service axe plans to change the rostering system for local paramedics saying it will increase the risk of staff fatigue.

The Department of Health wants to reduce 10 hour rosters to 8, but the union says paramedics will still be expected to be available for call outs for the other 16 hours of the day.

Union officials say while the government claims the move is aimed at reducing fatigue, it believes it is all about reducing costs, at the expense of the welfare of staff.

Health Service Union spokesman Tom Stevanja says paramedics will be working extra days,  and will end up having less time off for rest and recreation..

A series of meetings will be held on the far south coast today to discuss the situation.
