Council Changes Zoning - Oops -Fails To Tell Angry Farmer
Friday, 13 July 2012 00:32

lemon tree A local farmer has condemned Shoalhaven Council for the way in which it re-zoned his land without telling him.

A former maths teacher Kevin Gorman farms at the back of Berry.

He says he  was stunned when told the zoning on his property had been changed and was no longer considered a producing farm, although it could still be used it for primary production, under existing use rights.

Mr Gorman supplies Berry locals and some shops and cafes with produce from the farm which is currently his sole source of income.

When recently consulting council about removing masses of noxious weeds, and some fence lines, Mr Gorman was told he is not allowed to expand his operation.

Mr Gorman  says it was only a chance conversation with a council staffer.

He says one arm of council is trying to encourage local food production, while another arm is trying to discourage it.
