A man has suffered moderate burns while trying to extinguish a fire in his home at Old Erowal Bay this morning.

Rural Fire Service crews, police and paramedics were called to MacGibbon Parade at around 9.40am after reports that a home was alight.

James Morris from the RFS says the homeowner extinguished the fire with a garden hose but it has destroyed a bedroom in the home and caused widespread smoke damage.

It is believed an electrical fault started the fire and an investigation is now underway.

The ambulance rescue helicopter landed at Huskisson Oval and has airlifted the homeowner to Concord Hospital with moderate burns to parts of his body.
