Alexander Bain invented the first facsimile machine in 1843. Using the same general process as the telegraph, Bain found a way to transmit data images rather than sounds. Its really really simple and it works just like this:
When you sign up with any of the companies listed above they will assign you a telephone number in which you will divert your main fax line to. This number is known as a mid way number and connects directly to a server which converts the fax being received into a PDF, TIF or WORD file, once converted the fax is then forwarded to a nominated email address.

How much does it cost?
The best deal we have found so far is with www.efax.com, These guys charge $9.99 per month for the service with no lock in contracts and if you decide to send a fax through their service its 10 cents per page.
